Caples’ left-handed jab does the trick

Costa Mesa- Yvonne Caples wasn’t about to take any chances.

By quieting a pro-Mary Duron crowd that packed itself into a Costa Mesa Hilton Ballroom on Saturday, Caples won a unanimous decision over Duron and the IFBA Junior flyweight title.

“I’ve been in a position where I lost a fight because of the home crowd, so I had to make sure I won this fight,” Caples, of Las Vegas, said.

An effective jab, plenty of legwork and being left-handed did the trick. Tony Crebs and Lou Filippo gave Caples all 10 rounds, while Jerry Cantu had her winning eight of ten.

“I felt I was getting good, clean shots,” Caples said. “I had to win every round. She is a tough girl.”
