Caples Gives the Ol’ 1-2 punch at Silverado High
By Haben Asghedom and Stephanie Turnbull
Yvonne Caples is a teacher who loves her students; not only is she a teacher at Silverado High School, but she is an amateur and professional champion boxer as well.
A friend of Caples, who was a boxer, got her interested. Caples, looking for something challenging, considered boxing. In 1993, she decided to give it a shot.
“Man! This is hard, if I can do this, I can do anything,” said Caples as her first training session came to an end; she loved it.
During this time Caples was attending University of California at Berkeley where she joined the boxing team.
Figuring she probably couldn’t make a living out of boxing, she studied to become a teacher. Caples is now our ELL teacher.
She enjoys working with her students knowing that they come in understanding hardly any English and for the fact that they are eager to learn. Caples, originally from India, has lived in many places.
Boxing has given her the opportunity to travel, her favorite place being Puerto Rico.
Through her boxing career she has won many awards.
In August of 1999, while boxing in Georgia, Caples won the Amateur National Golden Gloves Championship, as well as a professional world title, in July of 2003 in Los Angeles.
Yvonne Caples has accomplished many of her goals and is ready to conquer more.
She is always up for a challenge.
“The fact that when you step into the ring, there’s somebody there trying to kill you is a challenge,” said Caples. She has suffered minor injuries such as a broken left hand and a cut over her left eye that did require stitches, but this hasn’t stopped her.
“The fact that I want to be the best and want to know and learn more, has kept me going,” said Caples.
Caples plans on boxing for three more years to make 13 before setting it aside. She will then still continue sharing her heart with her students.
Caples can easily be a hero, and someone to look up to as a teacher and a boxer.
